2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Introduced in 2001, the Toyota Highlander was the first midsize SUV to be launched based on a car rather than a track. When the Toyota Highlander Hybrid was launched for the 2006 model year, it was another first, earning the title of the first seven-seat hybrid vehicle. Since then the Highlander Hybrid has continued to boast strong sales, thanks to a compelling complement of performance, safety and strong design features.

The 2012 Highlander Hybrid retains the same styling as the previous year, following some modifications for the 2011 model. Overall the car retains its simple, smart styling, boasting a wide appeal to different drivers. The Hybrid’s clean lines convey a strong, stable road position, while small details like color-keyed outside mirrors and door handles enhance the look and feel beyond the ordinary. The interior is well-fitted, with simple design features and a high level of comfort throughout. The driving position is good, with excellent visibility and a safe, comfortable elevation for the driver.

For the 2012 model, the Highlander Hybrid is available in two trims, the base Hybrid and the Hybrid Limited. Both versions are powered by a gutsy 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 with variable valve timing. The hybrid powertrain delivers an impressive 280 brake horsepower, which means that despite the car’s environmentally-friendly roots, it is never short of power when it comes to acceleration. That hybrid engine also ensures that the Highlander Hybrid is able to meet strict emission standards, and is certified at Super Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) status.

The Highlander Hybrid offers a stable, smooth drive, thanks partly to a sharp electronically-controlled transmission that shifts quickly and cleanly. The 4-wheel independent suspension capably compensates for problems in the road surface, meaning that the Highlander Hybrid is comfortable and stable across different terrains. Both models feature electronic “on-demand” all-wheel drive, which is always compensating for the driver and other road conditions to optimize the handling. The brakes are sharp and responsive, and support the Hybrid’s energy-conscious roots by recirculating wasted energy.

The interior specification is high, both on the Hybrid and Hybrid Limited models. Both cars feature air conditioning, upgraded to three-zone climate control on the Limited model to help all the occupants enjoy the right level of comfort. The Highlander’s seats are supportive and comfortable both front and rear, with up to ten different adjustments for the driver on the Hybrid Limited model. Cruise control comes as standard, along with a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with hands-free controls and Bluetooth® capability.

Safety standards on the Highlander Hybrid are very high, with a strong specification of both passive and active safety applications. There are a host of airbags, adjustable seatbelts, and active headrests for the driver and front passenger that can help prevent whiplash injuries in the event of a rear collision. There are also side-impact door beams and front and rear crumple zones to help dissipate energy. Toyota’s Star Safety System™ is incorporated as standard and boasts a host of tools (such a traction control, stability control and anti-lock brakes) to maintain the safest possible driving conditions.

The base Hybrid model starts at $38,140, rising to $43,795 for the higher-spec Limited model. Both the Hybrid and Limited trims deliver an estimated 28 mpg on the highway and around the city, ensuring that the 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a great combination of comfort, practical features and environmental responsibility.
